How Google decides who shows on the map
Google ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are, including reviews, links and mentions). You can’t move your premises, so local SEO focuses on relevance and prominence.
| Factor | What it means | What we work on |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Does your business match the search? | Main category, services, profile description, website pages |
| Distance | How far are you from the person searching? | Accurate address or service area (this one can’t be gamed) |
| Prominence | How known and trusted are you? | Reviews, citations, links, mentions and website strength |
Google Business Profile optimisation and management
Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest factor in Google Maps rankings that you control. We optimise every part of it, including categories, services, description, photos, opening hours and posts, and then manage it monthly, so it stays complete, accurate and active.
For Torque Hub, adding 45 services to the Google Business Profile was one of the changes that moved the business from 25th to 11th against local competitors. Most profiles we see list only a handful of services, which leaves Google guessing what the business actually does.
Google reviews, the right way
Reviews help you rank and help customers choose you. We set up a simple process to ask genuine customers for reviews at the right moment, and we help you reply to every review. We never buy, write or incentivise fake reviews: under UK consumer law (the DMCC Act 2024), fake reviews are illegal.
Review count isn’t everything. With 28 reviews, Torque Hub outranks local competitors with over 600, because its profile, citations and website are stronger. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews matters more than a big old total.
Local citations: the UK directories that matter
A local citation is any online listing of your business name, address and phone number, such as Yell, Thomson Local, Bing Places, Apple Maps or an industry directory. Consistent citations help Google trust that your business details are accurate. We fix inconsistent listings and add you to the directories that matter for your industry.
Your free Google Maps heatmap scan
Our free map scan checks where your business ranks on Google Maps from 169 points around your postcode, about a mile apart. You see a heatmap of where you appear in the top 3, top 10 or not at all, compared with your local competitors, which shows exactly where local SEO needs to focus.
Most business owners only ever check their ranking from their own shop or home, where they usually look fine. Customers a couple of miles away often see a very different result. The scan shows the full picture.
Case study: Torque Hub, top 3 in 30 days
Torque Hub is a tyre fitter in Talke, Stoke-on-Trent. Between 9 September and 6 October 2026 it went from 25th to 11th against local competitors and into Google’s top 3 for “tyres near me”, a search with around 1,900 local searches a month. Phone calls rose 43% and map market share grew from 1.6% to 28.6%.
With 28 Google reviews, Torque Hub now outranks local competitors that have over 600. We built the website, fixed the business details across Google and key directories, added 45 services to the Google Business Profile, added schema markup and ran a review campaign.
Local SEO without a shop front
If you travel to customers, like most trades, cleaners and mobile services, you can still rank on Google Maps. Google lets service-area businesses hide their address and list the areas they cover. Local SEO then focuses on your service areas, local pages on your website, and reviews that mention the places you work.
- Set a service area in your Google Business Profile instead of showing a home address.
- Build pages for real areas you cover, with local details and examples of work there, not copy-paste town pages.
- Ask for reviews that mention the job and the area, in the customer’s own words.
Local SEO for small businesses and trades
Local SEO for small businesses works best when it focuses on the searches that bring in jobs: your main services plus “near me” and your town. Trades, garages, salons, clinics and shops can compete with much bigger businesses on Google Maps, because Google ranks the best local match, not the biggest company.
If you don’t have a website yet, or your current one doesn’t back up your profile, see web design. For wider organic rankings beyond the map, see SEO services.
Local SEO: questions people ask
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that helps a business appear when people nearby search for what it offers, especially in the Google Maps results (the “map pack”) and searches like “near me”. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details across directories, local pages on your website and schema markup.
How do I get my business on Google Maps?
Create a Google Business Profile at business.google.com, choose the right main category, add your address or service area, and complete Google’s verification. Once verified, your business can appear on Google Maps. To rank well, complete every section of the profile, add photos and services, and start collecting genuine reviews.
Do Google reviews help SEO?
Yes. Google says reviews and ratings are part of how it judges a business’s prominence in local results. More recent reviews, a good rating and replies from the owner all help. They aren’t the only factor though: Torque Hub outranks competitors with over 600 reviews using just 28, because the rest of its local SEO is stronger.
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO costs depend on how competitive your area and service are, how many locations you cover, and how much work your Google Business Profile, website and citations need. We start with a free map scan, then quote a clear monthly fee for the work involved, with no long contract.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
The usual reasons are an unverified or suspended Google Business Profile, the wrong main category, inconsistent business details online, too few reviews, or simply being further from the searcher than competitors. A map scan shows where you do and don’t appear, which narrows down the cause quickly.
How do I rank higher on Google Maps?
Choose the most accurate main category, complete every part of your Google Business Profile, list all your services, keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere, earn a steady flow of genuine reviews, and make sure your website backs up the profile with clear local pages and schema.
How long does local SEO take?
Map rankings can move within weeks once a Google Business Profile is fully optimised. Torque Hub reached Google’s top 3 for “tyres near me” in 30 days. Competitive areas and services take longer, typically a few months, and results build as reviews and citations grow.
